The Farmers Market is back in port Huron and I have to tell you I couldn't be happier. It is located at Vantage Point right on the St Clair River by the Black River in down town Port Huron. It is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays from 8AM to 2PM.
We went down there at about noon and the place was hopping. There were 6 or 7 vendors from the South Eastern Michigan area selling everything from fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to artisan breads and pastries, as well as potted plants and flowers. There was also a music festival going on at Vantage Point, so there was a little extra buzz other then the market this past Saturday. The weather was perfect to do anything outside so squeezing, smelling and choosing fresh produce made it a great day for me.
We purchased most of our produce from one vendor out of Armada Called Gaier Farms & Greenhouses. They are a 3rd generation family owned and operated 30 year old business, that has great produce. They also have been selling potted plants and flowers since 2007 under the name Peter's Pots. We made our purchase from Rosie who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the produce she was selling.
We got 12 ears of very delicious sweet corn, 3 beefsteak tomatoes, a pound of fresh crisp green beans, 5 peach's, 4 nice young yellow summer squash, and 3 HUGE white onions, for less then $20.00.
They were all giving shoppers a very sturdy canvas bag with a purchase of $10.00 or more that acts as a $1.00 off coupon when you take it back and use it at future visits to the Vantage Point Farmer's Market. I will surely be buying more produce from Gaier Farms & Greenhouses, but I will be making some purchases from the other vendors in the future as well.
I love the fact that the market is going to be there twice a week, because you don't have to buy all of your produce all at one time. Of course that means you are not only going to have something fun to do a couple times per week, but you have fresher fruits and vegetables.
I highly suggest that you make your way down to Vantage Point and get yourself some fresh produce and artisan bread, and while your there take advantage of the beautiful view of the water and listen to the music that is always playing, even when there isn't a music festival in town.
